Compound dwell is the time a finished vehicle sits in a yard between transport legs, and it is usually the largest controllable component of door-to-door time. Driving time is predictable. Dwell is not. Shippers who measure only line-haul transit are measuring the part of the journey that rarely goes wrong.
The Part of Transit Time Nobody Measures
Ask a finished vehicle logistics buyer how long a lane takes and you will get a line-haul answer. Port to inland hub, five days. Plant to dealer, seven days.
Those numbers describe wheels turning. They do not describe the vehicle's actual journey, which includes every hour it spends parked in a compound waiting for the next leg to be arranged.

Three Kinds of Dwell, Three Different Fixes
Treating dwell as one number is why it never gets fixed. It decomposes into three distinct problems with distinct causes.

Dispatch dwell is the one to attack first. It is the most common, the most invisible, and the cheapest to fix, because it is a planning problem rather than a capacity problem. A vehicle that is ready to move and sitting for six days is waiting on information, not on labor.
The consolidation tradeoff is where this usually breaks. Holding units to fill a nine-car rig lowers cost per unit and raises dwell. That is a defensible trade on inventory with no delivery commitment and an indefensible one on units a dealer is waiting for.
Dwell Is Depreciation on Inventory You Already Own
A vehicle in a compound is capital sitting still. The carrying cost does not pause because the vehicle is not moving.
The scale is easy to underestimate. US new-vehicle inventory stood at 2.73 million units with 75 days' supply and an average listing price of $49,249 (Cox Automotive, August 2026). Every incremental day of dwell across a national network is a large number multiplied by a large number.
For dealers waiting on units, the cost is sharper and more immediate, which we quantify in the real cost of vehicle transport delays. A unit in a compound is not on a lot, and a unit not on a lot cannot be sold.
Damage Happens in the Yard, and Gets Blamed on the Truck
This is the finding most compound content avoids. Vehicles are damaged in yards, and yard damage is routinely attributed to transport because transport is when it gets discovered.
The mechanism is straightforward. A vehicle is inspected at gate-in, sits for two weeks, gets moved three or four times by yard drivers during restacking, and is then inspected again at load-out. Any damage found at load-out lands on the transport record even when the vehicle never left the property.
Three practices separate the two:
- Inspect at gate-in and at load-out, not only at load-out. Without both, yard damage is indistinguishable from transport damage.
- Log internal yard movements. Every restack is a handling event and should be recorded as one.
- Minimize restacking by zoning on dispatch date. Vehicles grouped by outbound date get moved less than vehicles grouped by arrival date.

Yard Capacity Is a Lead-Time Constraint
Compound capacity is usually managed as a real estate line item. It behaves as a throughput constraint.
A full compound cannot accept arrivals. Vessels wait, trucks wait, and the queue propagates backward into lanes that have nothing to do with the yard. The cost surfaces as demurrage and detention on someone else's ledger, which is exactly why it stays unaddressed.
Two structural responses work:
- Hold buffer capacity deliberately. A yard run at 100% utilization has no ability to absorb a discharge surge, and surges are normal rather than exceptional.
- Distribute rather than concentrate. Multiple smaller compounds positioned near demand absorb variability better than one large one, and they shorten the final leg.

Mode Choice Changes the Dwell Profile
Rail and over-the-road distribution produce different dwell signatures, and the comparison is usually made on cost per mile alone.
Rail moves large volumes cheaply and creates dwell at both ends, since units accumulate to fill a railcar and then wait for a truck at the ramp. Over-the-road costs more per mile and eliminates one handoff entirely.
The break-even calculation should therefore include dwell days, not just line-haul cost. A rail lane that is cheaper per mile and adds eight days of accumulated dwell is not cheaper on inventory-carrying terms. What to Measure
Most finished vehicle programs track transit time and damage rate. Neither reveals a yard problem.
- Average dwell by compound, split into the three types. One aggregate number hides which problem you have.
- Dwell distribution, not just the mean. A yard with a five-day average and a twenty-day tail is failing on the tail.
- Handling events per unit. A proxy for restacking, and a leading indicator of yard damage.
- Gate-in to gate-out, per unit. The number a customer actually experiences.
- Utilization against capacity. The early warning for queue formation.
- Damage found at load-out versus at gate-in. The split that separates yard damage from transport damage.
